Larry Jones

Larry Jones is well known for his expertise in tax controversy matters and in dealing with the IRS. He is also Director of the Federal Taxpayers Clinic at the SMU Dedman School of Law and has taught Federal Tax Procedure at the School of Law. Larry was previously Director of the Small Business Clinic at the School of Law. Larry is Board Certified in Tax Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He was a Trial Attorney with the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice, and received substantial trial experience in the United States District Courts representing the United States in lawsuits involving taxpayers seeking to recover taxes paid to the IRS.

Larry advises and represents clients in IRS tax controversy matters. This includes audits, appeals, collections, criminal tax matters, and civil and criminal tax litigation.Clients are offered timely, effective, and efficient personalized service responsive to their tax and business matters in a manner committed to excellence in the practice of law. He has represented clients at all levels of the IRS, and in litigation against the United States.

Larry is an author, speaker, and professor. He is experienced and trusted as a tax attorney and is notably involved in defending, educating, and protecting citizens via his variety of professional services. Larry represents clients in various related cases such as federal and state audits, IRS appeals, and administrative proceedings.

Larry aims to focus his legal services regarding the IRS administrative process with the intentions of working to resolve various IRS matters at the district level or the Appeals Office before cases reach the point of filing lawsuits against the IRS. He has participated and succeeded in negotiating with the IRS regarding high-stake audit cases, criminal investigations, fraud penalties, IRS appeals, and tax planning controversies.

Larry has received a number of awards and acknowledgments for his work and participation in various academic programs, conferences and associations. He has been on multiple boards and a part of many associations in regard to protecting Dallas citizens.

Larry is on the Board of Advisors of the Journal of Tax Practice. He has procedure written columns for the Journal of Tax Practice & Procedure, various guides on dealing with the IRS, and published numerous articles. Larry has spoken to various groups on a variety of topics with a focus on challenging the IRS in multiple areas of tax controversies.

Larry is an adjunct professor and has taught Criminal Tax Fraud, and Taxation of Property Dispositions at the SMU Dedman School of Law. He has written and taught his own courses over various tax and IRS related topics for the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and other organizations.
